Tips for perfect Family Photos

Family Photos Do Not Have To Be Hard!

Let me repeat that, family photos do NOT have to be hard.

I can hear your objections … the voices saying what will we wear and where will we go. What if they don’t cooperate and my toddler cannot sit still and the kids are always fighting and my husband doesn’t like to have his picture taken and I want to lose 10 pounds.

So what? Your family is imperfectly perfect just like every other family out there! And the entire point of family photos is to take this moment in time and save it as a memory. I don’t love cliches but sometimes they are spot on…like the one that says “The days are long but the years are short.” Just yesterday I was a brand new mom and today I am ordering graduation announcements for one child and celebrating the other’s 21st birthday and never have I been more thankful for all the photos of them as littles!

If Family Photos still sounds overwhelming consider these things:

  • You don’t have to wear fancy clothes and they don’t have to match. Coordination is good but pick a color, any color, and everybody wear varying shades of it and your pictures will be beautiful. Or go black and white and grey and just like that everyone looks good! We are a die-hard baseball family so one year we all wore our favorite Rays apparel and you know what – it worked for us. Photos should reflect who you are – be you!
  • Happy kids are cute kids. I am a big proponent of letting kids be kids at a family session, I will wear my running shoes so you don’t have to. Kids running in open fields and sliding down slides or driving trucks on the beach with GIANT smiles on their faces look better on your wall than crying kids perfectly posed.
  • It is SO important to exist in photos. Whether someone lives just a brief life or a long one we want them in our images because they are loved. I am eternally grateful for all the moments I have frozen in photographs with my grandparents and friends that have passed away. When we take family photos we are not just capturing this moment for ourselves but for our children and their children and their children’s children.

As a parent I sometimes think adding one more thing to our schedule seems like too much and this particular thing – family photos – is just too stressful. Let me help – a simple phone call and I can help you plan the perfect time and location for your family and I guarantee we can make it fun! So what are you waiting for?

Little moments, big memories.
