Friendships

As the graduation announcements are printed, parties are planned and college applications are sent off you realize that an end of an era has arrived. High school may be a brief moment in your life but it is one that will forever change you, one that will pave the way to your adult life. The friendships you make there are hopefully the kind that last a lifetime. Senior photos help capture these moments but also these friendships.

I cannot wait to introduce you to my daughter Tori and her amazing friends. This group of young women are kind and generous, incredibly smart and I cannot wait to see what they do in the future.

Their friendship has covered a lot in these short years. They have lost things – competitions, boyfriends, friends, even loved ones – but stood together. They have won things – awards, national championships, new friends – and stood together. They have danced at homecoming and proms, they have cheered at football games and swim meets and performances, they have studied together, laughed together, cried together. I asked them each separately what do you love most about your friends and each of them said – they are just always “there”.

Cast of Characters

This is Kelly R – she is an awesome student. She is also a member of the famed Grand National Champion Tarpon Springs High School Marching Band and Winterguard. She practices crazy long hours, spends weekends traveling and competing, and still manages to be in National Honor Society and work a part time nanny job!

Kelly M is also an awesome student – one of the top ten actually. She is a cheerleader on the senior team for Cheer Express and also spends a lot of time practicing and traveling to and from competitions! She is also the president of Mu Alpha Theta, a member of NHS and has a job watching two littles!

Lauren just might be president one day – she started early – as president of National Honor Society, president of Key Club and she is the Chief Editor for the schools yearbook. Also a crazy good student and when she is not running one of those many things you will find her volunteering at a local hospital.

Lastly I am thankful to have met these accomplished young women through my daughter Tori – she is also a top ten student and spends her free time swimming on the swim team and participating in plays and musicals put on by the drama club of which she is co-president. She too is in National Honor Society and also in Fellowship of Christian athletes and holds a job at a local restaurant.

The Memories

“I will miss all the laughter memories created within these walls. It’s where I grew up and learned who I was and who i wanted to be. I will miss sitting in the football stadium on Friday nights and homecoming week when everybody dresses up but most of all I will miss seeing my friends grow and achieve every day. I have formed a second family at my school and leaving that behind will be the hardest.” says Kelly. They all agreed that leaving behind friends as they go off to college will be the hardest part of leaving high school.

The Lessons

As the “mom” writing this post I have to admit this was my favorite part of hearing these girls stories. I asked the girls what lessons they learned in high school and their answers were so encouraging!

  • Good friends are hard to come by but you only need a few close ones to be happy.
  • Stressing out about a problem never makes it better but usually makes it worse.
  • When you have a problem it is better to step back, take a deep breath, make a plan and stick to it.
  • If you want something you have to work for it, put in the time and energy in order to succeed.
  • Always stay true to yourself.

Dear sweet girls I am so thankful to have gotten to know each of you – I cannot wait to see what the future holds for each of you. Sometimes your generation gets a bad rep – but young women like you make me certain it is just rumors. May you remain the beautiful women you are – inside and out!

Love: the friendships, the memories, the accomplishments.                                                                                           Love: Captured.
